4 ways of characterization---copy in your literary elements section

There are four ways in which we learn about a character (characterization):

1. narrator's direct comments (He was a mean man)
2. physical description (tall, long legs, dark hair)
3. speech thoughts and actions ("You are stupid and ugly"-- he hurts people; he punches someone-he hurts people)
4. speech, thoughts and actions, of other characters (how other characters in the story act towards him/her, what other characters say about him or her)

Homework for Tuesday 10/11 20 pts.

1.Answer all of the questions on the anticipation guide for "Me" only(handout).
2.Follow the directions and write a sentence for each.
3.Choose two of the answers you gave and extend your answers thoroughly in paragraph form using examples from real-life or fiction to support your answers.

Assignment--chart and paragraph

Make a bar graph (with made up statistics) that shows the results of a survey on the favorite after-school activities (sports, clubs, etc.)of teenagers. Once you have completed the graph, write a paragraph that uses your statistics to support the claim that either:

*The favorite after-school sport of teenagers is basketball.

or

*There are many different sports that teenagers enjoy after-school

Fact vs. Opinion

Please write these notes in your literary elements section:

fact-- a statement that can be proven correct or incorrect.

reliability-- statements of fact can be incorrect, so it is important for readers to consider the source of the information-- are these facts dependable?

opinion--a statement of someone's beliefs, judgments, or feelings--things that are not factual. Look for words such as I think, I believe, terrible, wonderful, always, never.

nonfact--an opinion that cannot be proved or disproved.


Are these examples facts or opinions?
1. Fall is the best season of the year.
2. Fall begins in the month of September.
3. I think the Buffalo Bills will win the Super Bowl this year.
4. The Buffalo Bills play in the AFC East.

Theme in Nonfiction---(lit. elements section) Hw for Monday 10/3

The theme is the message of a nonfiction selection. It is not the same as subject, although in nf, it often has something to do with the subject. Rather, the theme reveals the writer's understanding of life or human nature.

Hw: In what ways do you think it would be difficult to live next to the United States (Canada, Mexixo). Explain your opinion. ---10 pts.

Writing a Narrative--1st draft due tomorrow

Today we are going to write our own narrative. You will choose the topic based on the following guidelines:

The topic should be about an obstacle you have faced and either overcome or been defeated by. This can be big or small. Think of something you have wanted or a conflict you have faced, how you approached it and what the end result was. You will need to incorporate all of the elements of a narrative in your paper.

*If you honestly cannot think of anything in the world (which I find hard to believe) you can make it up. But in actuality, no one will remember all of the details of an experience--you need to be creative.

Hw: "Getting a Job"

Explain the meaning of each of the following, aphorisms, or wise sayings, that Marguerite's mother used to give her daughter advice, and discuss how each one could apply to your life:
*Nothing beats a trial but a failure
*Life is going to give you just what you put into it
*You ask for what you want, and you pay for what you get
