Objectives:

Memoir Writing: Brainstorming and Pre-writing

Today we are going to work on doing the pre-writing steps for our memoirs. First, we will complete an idea web (per 10) and the worksheet I gave you that will help you prepare to write your rough draft. Remember, the rough draft is due Monday the 15th and the final copy is due on Friday the 19th. The rough draft counts for 25 of 100 pts. The final copy must be FINAL COPY QUALITY in order to be accepted. I will give you a rubric later this week so you can see how it will be graded.

DRP--Reading Skills Pre-test

I know you have taken this before, but each year we need to start off with the DRP to see where you are now from where you were last year. This will count as our first quiz grade. However, since it isn't about anything we have learned this year, everyone who completes the DRP will receive a 100 as his/her first quiz grade. Please just take your time so I don't get the wrong idea about you. It is very important for both of us that I know where your skill level is. If you finish early, please just turn it over and wait for it to be collected. You may work on your first day sheet or I will provide extra credit for those that want it. Night Hw #3 (20 pts.)

Elie talks about his first night in camp being a pivotal moment in his life--turning the rest of his life into one long night.
*Describe either: a pivotal moment in your life that changed it for the worse or better or "one long night."
Be sure to give details describing what happened and how it was significant.
(Should be at least 2 paragraphs long)

Homework #2: Night

Night explores two central questions: What is the relationship between our stories and our identity? To what extent are we all witnesses of history and messengers to humanity?

Answer both of these questions to the best of your ability before we read the memoir. Be warned--this will take some thinking.

Help:
*What is the relationship between our life experiences and who we are or become?
*What role do each of us play in being a part of history and carrying out the world's messages?
