Notes on Tragedy---Julius Caesar

tragedy--presents the downfall of a dignified character who is involved in historically or socially significant events. This fall is usually caused by a flaw in his character.

tragic hero--the main character, dignified who has a downfall based mainly on a poor character trait. He/she evokes both pity and fear in readers because the audiences realizes the struggles faced by him are necessary parts of human life.

tragic flaw--whatever is wrong with his character that causes his destruction--usually leads to an error in judgment.

Essay Topic

Write a controlling idea essay between 1-2 pages long on the following topic:

the effect of parents on their children

You will state if they have an effect or not and why

Give examples from the novel to support your answers

On page 176, Obierika says, “The white man came quietly and peaceably with his religion.We were amused at his foolishness and allowed him to stay. Now he has won our brothers, and our clan can no longer act like one. He has put a knife on the things that held us together and we have fallen apart”.

1. Restate Obierika's main point in your own words. Describe what has happened to Umuofia and how?

2.Think about the book’s title, Things Fall Apart-----what is falling apart? Is it more than one thing?

Mon.--Journal Entry: You are casting a movie about your life. Today, decide on a title, a genre, a budget, and a few of the top-billed cast members.
The movie doesn’t need to be a docudrama, but it can be one; it can also be a science fiction adventure (which your life may be, anyway).

Tues.--Journal Entry: Continuing the movie of your life, decide on a plot. Spend five minutes jotting down the plot outline of the story. What is/are the setting(s), what are the main events, etc.

Wed.--Journal Entry: To finish up the movie of your life, draft us a sample scene. Pick the opening shot, the climactic battle, or the final, tearful goodbye;
write out the action in the scene, the dialogue, etc., as if it were going to be performed.

Thurs.--Journal Entry: When have you been unfairly punished for something you did accidentally? Did you protest at the time? Did you complain later?
Was the situation every rectified?

Fri.--Journal Entry: To whom do you go when you’re in desperate need of help? Think of a time when you were in trouble, depressed, hurt, or
otherwise in need of aid; to whom did you go, and what did they do for you?

Journal on Betrayal--10-15 minutes, 3-4 paragraphs

*Think of a time when you felt that you were betrayed by someone you cared about?
