Caesar goes to the capitol; he will not read Artemidorus's letter. The men gather and ambush Caesar. They stab Caesar to death, then bathe their hands with his blood. Caear looks at Brutus and says, "Et tu, Brute?" (you too Brutus?). Marc Antony enters and pays his respects to Caesar. He pretends that he wants to make peace with the conspirators. He asks to speak at Caesar's funeral. Despite objections, Brutus gives him permission to speak. When alone, Antony begs forgiveness and vows revenge for Caesar's murder.

Act II Summary for your flipbook and in class assignment
Brutus debates whether or not to help kill Caesar. He reads the letter and it convinces him to lead the plot against him. He insists they do not harm Antony. They decide they will kill Caesar tomorrow (3/15) by the 8th hour. Calpurnia begs Caesar not to go because of her strange dreams/happenings. He decides to go when he hears he may be king. Artemidorus has written he names of the conspirators on paper that he plans to hand to Caesar and the soothsayer warns him again.--He goes anyways.

Notes on Tragedy
tragedy--presents the downfall of a dignified character who is involved in historically or socially significant events. This fall is usually caused by a flaw in his character.
tragic hero--the main character, dignified who has a downfall based mainly on a poor character trait. He/she evokes both pity and fear in readers because the audiences realizes the struggles faced by him are necessary parts of human life.
tragic flaw--whatever is wrong with his character that causes his destruction--usually leads to an error in judgment.

For homework tonight: Reread any sections of Act I that you do not understand or remember to answer the questions at the back of your booklet for Act I on a separate sheet of paper.
