Notes/homework from Monday 9/22

If you finish early, and want extra credit: REMEMBER, NO TALKING UNTIL EVERYONE IS FINISHED.

Context Clues- When attempting to figure out the meaning of a new word, it is often useful to look at what comes before and after that word. Here are 5 Common types:

  • Root word and prefix/suffix: People who study birds are experts in ornithology.
  • Contrast: Unlike mammals, birds incubate their eggs outside their bodies.
  • Logic: Birds are always on the lookout for predators that might harm their young.
  • Definition: Frugivorous birds prefer eating fruit to any other kind of food.
  • Example or illustration: Some birds like to build their nests in inconspicuous spots — high up in the tops of trees, well hidden by leaves.

*From same book as “Rules of the Game”

Chunk 1: How do Jing-mei’s interactions with her mother develop over the course of this passage? What is she hoping will happen?
hw: complete #'s 1-10 on the "Two Kinds" context clues worksheet.

Characterization Notes: Please Copy into your Literature Section

Characterization – how the author develops a character. Can be:
Direct: you are told.
Or
Indirect: you look at the text and draw conclusions.
This is done in 4 basic ways:
  1. Physical Appearance—what the character looks like
  2. Actions-- What that character does; how he/she interacts with other characters; how he/she affects them
  3. Thoughts/Words—what he/she says
  4. Thoughts, feelings, actions of other characters: what does this tell you about your character?
  5. Narrator/Author’s Direct Comments: you are told—“She was a greedy girl”, “a quiet boy”
Today we will: (objectives) ---No need to copy unless you want to
1. Complete a characterization of Waverly Jong using the “Characterization” Worksheet

2. Come up with 3 traits (adjectives) that describe her and support with 2 examples from the text “Rules of the Game” using the worksheet “Character Map

Question/Answer Relationships

Please Copy the following Notes into your Literature Section/Daily Notes:

Question Types—

“Right There”--The answer is in the text. The words used to make up the question and words used to answer the question are found in the same sentence. (Not always an Explain)

“Think and Search”-- The answer comes from different places in the selection. You will need to look back at the passage, find the information that the question refers to, and then think about how the information or ideas fit together.

“Author and Me”-- These type questions require you to use ideas and information not stated directly in the passage to answer; so, you must think about what you have read and formulate your own ideas or opinions.

“On My Own”--The answer is not in the text. You can answer the question without even reading the text. The answer is based solely on your own experiences and knowledge. (**No Textual Evidence)

Homework: (copy at the bottom of the worksheet if you want to): due Fri. 9/19, 25 pts.

Use your Venn Diagram to write a PARAGRAPHED RESPONSE (2-3) comparing and contrasting Waverly Jong’s and Mrs. Jong’s: cultural backgrounds, personalities, ideas about chess, and hopes and dreams for Waverly. (You will need the back of this worksheet for tomorrow and for the quiz Monday so don’t lose it). If you need help copy the basic set-up of a compare/contrast:

Par 1: Similarities                              ------or---              Par 1: Waverly

Par 2: Differences                                                              Par 2: Mrs. Jong

DRP--Reading Skills Pre-test

I know you have taken this before, but each year we need to start off with the DRP to see where you are now from where you were last year. This will count as our first quiz grade. However, since it isn't about anything we have learned this year, everyone who completes the DRP will receive a 100 as his/her first quiz grade. Please just take your time so I don't get the wrong idea about you. It is very important for both of us that I know where your skill level is. If you finish early, please just turn it over and wait for it to be collected. You may work on your first day sheet or I will provide extra credit for those that want it. Thank you for your cooperation.
