Please copy these notes and make them the 2nd page in your binder (behind "How to be successful in ENG II")

How to Annotate a text
1.  Underline/highlight words/sentences you know you will want to use later.
2. Write in the margin at the top or bottom of the page to record questions/answers you have.
3.  Summarize paragraphs in the side margins.
4. Star ideas that seem important, or may support your thesis writing later (*)
5. Box or circle words and phrases that you do not know or that you find confusing. Rewrite a word or phrase you might have figured out.
6. Add an arrow to make connections between points.
7. Put a question mark next to a section you 're questioning (?)
8. Use an exclamation mark for areas that remind you of another test, strike you in some way, or surprise you. (!)

Homework:

  • Read to the end of the story (or re-read depending on what we finish in class) and annotate as you go.

(Be prepared to talk about the reading in class tmrw)

  • Answer the following question using the RACE strategy:

According to Jing-mei's mother, why is Jing-mei "not the best"? What trait does she find valuable?
