Characterization – how
the author develops a character. Can be:
Direct: you are told.
Or
Indirect: you look at the
text and draw conclusions.
This is done in 4 basic ways:
- Physical
Appearance—what the character looks like
- Actions--
What that character does; how he/she interacts with other characters; how
he/she affects them
- Thoughts/Words—what
he/she says
- Thoughts,
feelings, actions of other characters: what does this tell you about
your character?
- Narrator/Author’s Direct Comments: you are told—“She was a greedy girl”, “a quiet boy”

2. Come up with 3 traits
(adjectives) that describe her and support with 2 examples from the text “Rules
of the Game” using the worksheet “Character Map”
